Chico Lanete returns to a familiar ground after being named the new head coach of the Lyceum of the Philippines University Junior Pirates starting in NCAA Season 102.
Lanete, a three-time PBA champion, played for LPU from 2000 to 2003 during the school’s stint at the NCRAA and is now set for a homecoming to guide the next breed of Junior Pirates.
“Well, of course, we are very happy and proud to have appointed a head coach who is an alumnus of LPU,” said LPU athletic director Dr. Allan Layco.
“He is already familiar with the Lycean culture and the Laurel family’s philosophy in running the team.”
The 46-year-old Lanete, who suited up for multiple PBA clubs like Petron, Meralco, and San Miguel, was an icon for LPU, which he steered to three finals appearances while also capturing the Rookie of the Year recognition and a Mythical Five inclusion in his final year.
“Siyempre, super grateful and honored ako na makabalik sa LPU. Malaki ang naging role ng LPU sa narating ko as a basketball player,” said Lanete.
“So coming back now as a head coach means a lot to me. Ngayon, excited ako to give back and help develop the next generation of players.”
Lanete will replace Al Vergara at the helm as he looks to rebuild the program that went 3-10 in the group stage of Season 101 before eliminating San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the play-in. They Junior Pirates, though, bowed to San Beda in the quarterfinals.
Lanete is the latest new face in LPU’s basketball program with Jamike Jarin replacing Gilbert Malabanan in the seniors team.
