Victor Wembanyama was unable to play any part in the second half of the San Antonio Spurs’ 115-102 win over the Philadelphia 76ers after picking up a rib injury on Monday night.
The issue arose during the second quarter when Wembanyama collided with Paul George near midcourt while trying to receive a pass in transition. He briefly left the game following the impact and, although he returned to the bench and later re-entered before half-time, he was unable to continue.
With under a minute remaining in the half, Wembanyama asked to come off again and headed back to the locker room.
He did not return after the break, with the Spurs confirming he would sit out the remainder of the contest due to a left rib contusion.
Head coach Mitch Johnson said there was no immediate clarity on the extent of the injury but took some encouragement from the fact the 22-year-old had attempted to play on after the initial knock.
He said: “I know he came back and he just didn’t finish,” Johnson said. “At half-time, I was told he wasn’t coming back. I haven’t heard anything else up to this point. I think it would be a positive that he felt like he could come back, and he played the last four or five minutes of the half. So, that’s a positive from my perspective.”
Wembanyama logged just over 15 minutes, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds and three blocks. That appearance still counts toward league award criteria, though he will need to meet minimum playing time requirements in at least one of San Antonio’s remaining games to stay eligible.
The Frenchman has been central to the Spurs’ late-season push, leading the team in scoring, rebounding and blocks, and remains firmly in contention for both Defensive Player of the Year and MVP recognition.
