Matthews was injured in the second period during Thursday night’s win against the Anaheim Ducks after receiving a knee-on-knee hit from Radko Gudas.
Gudas was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct on the play, while Matthews was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest.
Meanwhile, Gudas will have a hearing by phone with the NHL Department of Player Safety and could be suspended for a maximum of 5 games.
Matthews missed six games earlier this season with a lower-body injury.
There are only 16 games left in the regular season, and the Maple Leafs sit last in the Atlantic Division with 67 points.
